Desk Assistants

A Desk Assistant (DA) is a part-time, hourly student staff position within the Department of Residence Life.  The DA works at the Front Desk to maintain an environment that encourages the academic and personal growth of the students within their assigned hall.  In carrying out his or her duties, the DA is expected to exhibit exemplary customer service by treating other students, supervisors, guests, and fellow employees with courtesy and respect.  The DA is considered an integral part of the Department of Residence Life and Housing and its efforts to maintain its mission.

**This position requires availability during nights, weekends, holidays, departmental events, Fall and Spring Break, Residence Hall closure due to weather, and for training prior to classes beginning for both the Fall and Spring semesters**

Requirements  

  • All students in good academic and conduct standing will be considered for this position.    
  • Must have and maintain at least a 2.00 GPA

Time Commitment

Adheres to weekly desk schedule and maintains a schedule of at least 10 Front Desk hours per week.  Front Desks in the Residence Halls are staffed by Desk Assistants and Residents Assistants from 7:00 am-11:00 pm daily while Residence Halls are open.

  • Attends training sessions as assigned by the Department of Residence Life.  These Training sessions may occur before Residence Halls open for the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Responsible for assisting with staffing the desk during respective closings and openings, as well as breaks.
  • Maintain consistent, sometimes daily, contact with fellow DAs, RAs, RHDs, and the Department of Residence Life.
  • Regular interaction with residential students and guests in a positive, respectful, and professional manner.

Professional /Administrative

  • Represents the College in a positive manner at all times through customer service, ethical decision making, and enforcing/adhering to all College policies and procedures (including FERPA) on and off-campus.
  • Serves as an appropriate role model by following policies and procedures; accepting and completing assigned responsibilities, and encouraging participation in campus activities.
  • Know, communicate, and enforce the policies and procedures of the Department of Residence Life and the College.
  • Interacts with Residence Life and Housing staff, College personnel, and residents in an open, constructive manner.
  • Uphold the mission and philosophical spirit of the Department of Residence Life and Housing.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with direct supervisor and staff through incident reports and other appropriate paperwork.
  • Carries out information responsibilities and certain other administrative and clerical tasks as assigned by the RHD and/or Leadership Team member.
  • Responsible for all material and information contained in the appropriate student staff handbook or manual, Guide to Residence Living, Position Descriptions, Confidentiality Statement, and this Work Agreement. Understand that these documents are subject to change at which point you will be notified.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Department.

Length of Service

The length of service for the Desk Assistant position begins with Fall Training until one day after Residence Halls close after the Spring Semester.  The exact dates will be shared if you are offered a position.

Current Compensation

Compensation for this position is an hourly rate of at least $8.00.
